The Bulgarian government is going to start a procedure for retrieving 4 500 decares of forest lands that have been unlawfully restored to the former Tsar and former PM, Simeon Saxe-Coburg.

This has been announced Friday by Bulgaria’s Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov.

Upon returning to Bulgarian (and becoming Prime Minister) in 2001, Simeon Saxe-Coburg has sought and achieved the restoration of his ownership over the estates owned by the Bulgarian royal family before 1944.

In the beginning of 2008, however, the first reports appeared that Saxe-Coburg has received 4 500 decares more than he was supposed to get back.

The Chair of Bulgaria’s State Forestry Agency, Georgi Kostov, has ordered the filing of a suit for the recovery of the additional forest plots. It is still unclear when the suit will be filed but Minister Naydenov said the chances for getting back the 4 500 decares of land were estimated at 100% by the Ministry’s lawyers.

At the order of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, Kostov has also banning all lumbering on the plots in question, out of fears that the forests there might be cut down while the legal procedures for their recovery are going on.

Minister Naydenov also said the Bulgarian state was to claim the missed benefits from the forest plots in question because of lumbering activities that had been going on there after Saxe-Coburg gain ownership over them.

Meanwhile, the rightist Blue Coalition, which backs the government of the GERB party, has expressed its satisfaction with the State Forestry Agency position on Saxe-Coburg’s restored estates that they received from Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

The Blue Coalition leaders, Ivan Kostov and Martin Dimitrov, have declared they would keep insisting on protecting the national interests whenever they were violated by “the unfounded property claims of Saxe-Coburg.”
