Bulgaria's new prime minister has showed support for the proposed raise in excise duties on cigarettes next year in a bid to curb smoking.

"Europe gave up smoking, the United States gave up smoking, we will have to give up smoking as well," Boyko Borisov commented on Friday.

He admitted he has lately become even more addicted to smoking, but is forced not to reach for the packet when he is abroad as there is “nowhere to smoke there”. In his words the new, higher prices of the cigarettes will be one more reason for him to cut down on smoking.

Bulgaria's new Finance Minister Simeon Djankov plans excise duties on cigarettes to jump to EUR 76 per 1,000 pieces as of January 1 from EUR 53 at present, which is expected to bring about BGN 226 M to the budget.

The move will be part of the 2010 budget which the new government of the center-right GERB party will discuss next week.
