Bulgaria Pedophile Arrest Part of International Ring Bust

The arrest of a 72-year-old German man early Wednesday in Bulgaria’s Samokov was reportedly part of a Europe-wide bust on a massive pedophile ring.

The man was arrested after he allegedly circulated nude pictures of local Roma children, aged from a few months to seven years old. Following the photo sessions he rewarded them with chocolates. The German and Bulgarian police were both involved in the operation.

In Germany police and prosecutors raided homes and offices of 121 people suspected of forming an international ring trading child pornography over the Internet.

Nine suspects were arrested in the probe that started last night, the German police (BKA) said in an e-mailed statement on Wednesday. The raid targeted members of a German-language pedophile Internet community, the office said.

The members of the ring are suspected of misusing children, filming it and sharing the material via the Internet. The group has 136 members, the BKA said. Raids also took place in Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Canada and the US targeting the top 15 members of the ring. About 220 computers and more than 17 000 digital storage media were seized.
