Balkans Need EUR 30 B for 15-Years Energy Investment Plan

In the Next 15 years the Balkan Peninsular will need around 15 000 MW of new electricity production powers, which will cost around EUR 30 B.

The announcement has been made Tuesday by the head of the Bulgarian Electrical Company, Georgi Mikov, at a round table discussion organized by the Bulgarian Parliament.

The discussion was organized by the Parliament's Economy Committee, and Minister, MPs, experts and representatives of civil organizations discussed the future of the Belene nuclear power plant.

The participants have been trying to find answers to questions on the price of the plant, its economic purpose, the price of the produced electricity, the project's safety, and many others.

In his report Mikov discussed the facts, and stressed on the future Bulgarian energy balance.

He pointed out that the main part of the electricity supply in Bulgaria comes from the Kozloduy NPP, and the heat-powered plants.

Mikov also gave a list of the electricity production facilities that will be closed down until 2015. These are the plants in Brikel, Bobov Dol, Varna, and others. He also announced some powers that will be completed and operational until 2020 – Maritsa-Iztok 1, hydro power plant “Tsankov Kamak”, and other hydro power plants.

Among the new power, Mikov included Belene NPP with its 2 000 MW and its future contruction in the period 2016-2018. He announced that Bulgaria currently has 1 800 MW of reserve powers, and after Belene is completed they will be doubled.

In his words, after 2013 the conventional heat-powered plant will become too expensive to construct, and their number will decrease, because of European Union regulations.
