The Bulgarian right-wing Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) nominated, Nadezda Mihaylova, as their candidate to run for EU Commissioner.

The news was announced Tuesday by the UDF leader, Martin Dimitrov, who said the Bulgarian European Commissioner must be designated by a public competition, adding UDF did not hold talks with the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party.

“Competition is a must in this selection process. It is also important for GERB that Bulgaria has the most successful Commissioner it can have,” Dimitrov said.

The UDF leader stressed the first thing on the agenda should be talks with the European Commission to find out what potential sectors could be assigned to Bulgaria and then propose nominations.

The term of Bulgaria's fist EU Commissioner, Meglena Kuneva, is expiring in October. Kuneva is from the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NMSP) party of former Tsar and Prime Minister, Simeon Saxe-Coburg, which failed to win any parliamentary seats in the July general elections.

New Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, announced he was not going to nominate Kuneva for second term.

Dimitrov further informed that Mihaylova is meeting Wednesday with the Chair of the European People's Party (EPP) Wilfred Martens, to discuss the Bulgarian EU Commissioner nomination.

In June Mihaylova was elected Member of the European Parliament.
