The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 40 180 Bulgarians have served prison time in foreign jails over the past 11 years.

The Ministry also confirmed that 2 322 Bulgarians have been arrested and kept behind bars since the beginning of September.

Germany has become the number one destination for Bulgarian criminals with 24 432 Bulgarians having been found ‘guilty’ of various crimes since 1998. Greece and France are in second and third place with 4 333 and 2 184 Bulgarians having been found guilty respectively.

The vast majority of guilty verdicts issued in the EU and US were for fraud related crimes. Bank account draining, money laundering, internet fraud and “green card” marriages were the most common. Spain and Belgium also reported large numbers of Bulgarian pimps being arrested.
