Bulgaria with 37 000 Abortions per Year

Bulgaria is ranked third in Eastern Europe after Russia and Ukraine on the percentage of abortions.

This has been announced during a press conference at the Sheynovo gynecology hospital in Sofia on Saturday.

With 75 000 births per year, Bulgaria’s 37 000 abortions on average annually mean that one-third of all pregnancies end with abortion.

According to the presented data, only 20% of the pregnancies in Bulgaria are planned compared to about 60-70% in the other EU states. Only 6% of the Bulgarian women use contraceptive pills.

Abortions are one of the possible causes of sterility. 250 000 couples in Bulgaria are reported to have sterility problems.
