The head of the EU Directorate General Information Society and Media, Fabio Colasanti, claims that there is no competition on the Bulgarian mobile communications market.

Colasanti's conclusion is based on the statistics that show only 1 200 Bulgarians used their right to keep their mobile phone number when they change the provider. For a country like Bulgarian, at least 5 000 - 10 000 people should do this each month.

Colasanti announced this Thursday during a session of the Bulgaria Parliament Committee on Transport, Information Technology and Communication.

In his words, Bulgaria has created a telecommunications watchdog, which operates, but there are no results, because on the Bulgarian market there is no competition, and opportunity to choose, and there are new thing introduced. These things can be found in the other EU member states.

According to Colasanti, the state itself must provide competition on the market, and working regulatory body, that will have the technical resources and support to perform its duties.

"Without the right to keep ones number, we cannot talk about competition between the mobile companies. Keeping the numbers is a basic condition for market competition, and was introduced in other states long ago", Colasanti said.

The Bulgarian mobile operators have performed some actions to introduce this service, but they also put many different rules in order to make it difficult for their clients to use it, he said.
