A party named "Muslim Democratic Union" is expected to be founded over the weekend in the village of Slavyanovo.

The village is located in northern Bulgaria, near the town of Popovo, an area largely populated by ethnic Turks.

In order to found a new political organization at least 500 people must attend the event, which is scheduled as a concert for the Muslim Ramazan Bayrami holiday.

Yuzeir Yuzeirov, organizer of the event, says 680 individuals have filled the founding declaration so-far and 800, at least, will attend.

If there is lack of quorum, the concert will go on as a holiday event and will be dedicated to the second anniversary of the founding of the "Club for Friendship and Brotherhood" in Slavyanovo.

Yuzeirov has been involved in a storm of controversy lately. In addition to the club, he is the founder and leader of the "Bulgarian Red Crescent," an organization the Bulgarian Red Cross says is illegal according to the Geneva Convention.

The Red Cross says the existence of the Crescent in Bulgaria is a precedent because a country can only have either a Red Cross or a Red Crescent, never both.

The Red Crescent headquarters are in Slavyanovo as well. The building housing it and the Club has a cross and a crescent painted on its walls.

Another controversy involves the monument of the "Unknown Turkish Soldier," also located in Slavyanovo and financed by Yuzeirov. The Regional Directorate for Construction Control has declared the monument illegal and ordered its dismantling.

Yuzeirov is a native from Slavyanovo, but has international business for the trade of chicken meat and spends most of his time in Belgium.
