The Bulgarian capital city, Sofia, will celebrate the International Day of Peace, September 21, with a parade in its downtown.

This has been announced by the United Nations Association in Bulgaria, which is one of the organizers of the event.

The parade is organized for the sixth time in a row, and has started from the National Theater "Ivan Vazov".

The International Day of Peace will also be marked by a football tournament, as in many different places around the world there will be volleyball, basketball, and other sports tournaments.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 with a UN Resolution as the third Tuesday in September.

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly voted to create September 21 as the fixed date for Peace Day. The purpose of this day is to promote peace and encourages people to keep working towards it. To begin the day, the Peace Bell, made of coins that were donated by children from around the world, is rung at the UN headquarters.

Over the years, Peace Day has grown substantially on all continents. There are thousands of events organized that millions of people participate in to commemorate this day that include music concerts, parades, festivals, prayer vigils, workshops and school activities. Some militaries even declare a cease-fire for the day.
