The oldest Bulgarian newspaper in Serbia, "Bratstvo" (Brotherhood), has approached the government in Sofia for financial aid to escape bankruptcy after the Serbian state cut by 75% the media funding.

The government funding, which is 80% of the newspaper's budget, was reduced in May, the rest of the budget is funded by advertisements and own resources. The newspaper is part of a publishing house of the same name.

„We have turned for help to the Serbian government, but to no avail. Our only hope now is that the government of Bulgaria finds the money - about 75,000 levs - to svae the publishing house from closure," the Director of the "Bratstvo" publishing house, Neboysha Ivanov, told the Bulgarian National Radio.

He stressed that the Bulgarians living in Serbia have pinned high hopes on the new government to continue its work for solving their problems.

Official data shows that near 25 000 Bulgarians live in Serbia and Montenegro, and they are recognized as national minority.

The circulation of "Bratstvo" is 2 000-2 500, and nineteen journalists work for the newspaper.
