Bulgaria Marks First Day of New School Year

59 596 first graders have entered classrooms across Bulgaria on their official first day at school.

The school year was officially opened at 9 am with the hoisting of the national flag and the sounds of the national anthem being heard across the country.

The school year opened in 2667 schools. "We have every assurance that the organization has been made to ensure the proper functioning of the educational process," Education Minister Yordanka Fandakova stated.

All the members of the center-right GERB cabinet attended the opening of a different school on Tuesday morning.

"During a financial crisis the best type of investment is an investment in education," Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov stated, while opening the school year at the mathematics high school "Kiril Popov" in Plovdiv.
