The Bulgarian film "Eastern Plays" of director, Kamen Kalev, a co-production with Sweden, is among the top three selected to compete for the EP LUX Prize.

In June the Bulgarian film made the top ten. The news about the three finalists was announced Friday at the International Film Festival in Venice. The other two are STURM, of director Hans-Christian Schmid (Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands), and WELCOME, of director Philippe Lioret (France)

The objective of the LUX Prize (light), founded in 2007, is to illuminate the public debate on European integration and to facilitate the diffusion of European films in the European Union.

The LUX Prize will finance the subtitling and the kinescope recording of the winning film in the 23 official EU languages. The original language recording will be adapted for sub-titling for hard of hearing and deaf people.

The films have been selected because of their quality and their contribution to the European public debate, highlighting topics such as solidarity, immigration, justice, public freedom or fundamental rights. Beyond the social issues it illustrates, every film becomes a window which opens up on Europeans, their questions, their daily lives and their quest for identity.

A vote will be cast by the 736 Members of the European Parliament to elect the winner, which will then be awarded the LUX Prize 2009 at the European Parliament on November 25 in Strasbourg.
