The Members of the Bulgarian Parliament passed Friday, at first read, the amendments in the ID Act that introduce biometric data in all Bulgarian ID documents.

The Deputy Interior Minister, Vesselin Vuchkov, said that the Interior is fully prepared to begin issuing the new IDs as early as March of 2010.

The amendments aim to have one norm decree for the issuing of all documents along with compliance with the EU requirements about biometric data and safety markings.

Vuchkov also told the MPs that he is appealing before the Supreme Administrative Court the public tender conducted by the former Interior leadership for the issuing of the new ID documents.

The amendments also provide the option for individuals to apply for IDs online if they already have stored biometric data. Children under 12 will not be fingerprinted.

The Deputy Interior Minister, however, pointed out that there were still issues to be discussed and included in the new Act such Ids and gender changes.
