A Bulgarian tax inspector was caught with a bribe of BGN 20 000 in a special operation of the State National Security Agency DANS and the Prosecutor's Office.

The 32-year-old employee of the National Revenue Agency, Dilyana Kamenova, was arrested late Wednesday night.

The Sofia City Prosecutor, Nikolay Kokinov, has announced that Kamenova went to the office of a Bulgarian businessman who applied for a VAT tax refund amounting to BGN 120 000, and offered to help him to get the tax refund faster if he paid to her BGN 20 000 for the favor.

The businessman in question, Nikolay Lalov, from Globus Estate alerted the prosecutor's office and the police before he gave Kamenova all BGN 2 000 that he had in cash.

The BGN 2 000 was considered a first installment in what appeared to function as a bribe leasing scheme.

The corrupt tax inspector has been detained for 72 hours; the prosecutors are going to request her dismissal from the NRA, and her permanent detention while the investigation is under way.
