The European Union agreed to release millions of dollars in farm aid to Bulgaria on Monday after ruling that Bulgaria had put in place financial controls to guard against fraud and corruption.

The announcement will free about USD 27 M in farm subsidy payments and USD 129 M to help Bulgaria modernize its agriculture.

The bloc cut off aid and froze subsidies last year out of concern that the money would be siphoned off by organized crime.
