The European Commission has unfrozen EUR 19 M of Bulgaria's SAPARD Program funds that had been blocked over earlier violations.

This has been announced Monday afternoon by Bulgaria's Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, citing information from the EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Mariann Fischer Boel, who met earlier with Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov.

Earlier on Monday, Naydenov announced Boel had given indications that all of the blocked EUR 140 M of farm cash for Bulgaria would be unfrozen on September 10. Boel's Spokesperson, Michael Mann, has confirmed that EUR 19 M would be unblocked immediately; those funds are for projects that have already been submitted to Brussels, and with which no violations had been detected.

The EU Agriculture Commissioner is also said to have expressed satisfaction with certain measures undertaken by Bulgarian authorities to rectify the situation in which the EU money was frozen over fraud and abuse reported by OLAF, the European Anti-Fraud Office.
