Bulgaria Unification Day Celebrations Canceled over Ohrid Tragedy

Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv has canceled all celebrations for the Unification Day, Sept. 6, over the tragedy in Ohrid, Macedonia, in which at least 13 Bulgarian tourists died.

The Unification Day, celebrating the National Unification of Bulgaria from September 6, 1885, and it is both a national holiday and a holiday of the city of Plovdiv, which usually hosts the national celebrations each year.

Most of the Bulgarian tourists who died in Ohrid Saturday as the Ilinden ship sank in the Ohrid Lake in Macedonia are reported to come exactly from the city of Plovdiv.

The Plovdiv Mayor, Slavcho Atanasov, has canceled all events, and Sunday is expected to be a day of national mourning in Bulgaria.
