Bulgaria's parliamentary commission to probe deals, spendings and appointments made during the last year of the ousted Socialist government term will not deliver punishments as an end in itself, its chair said.

"The commission will not be turned into a body, convent or some form of a tribunal to hand out punishments and verdicts," Stoyan Mavrodiev said in an interview for the Bulgarian News Agency.

He said that "shocking revelations for corruption and conflicts of interests" are being unearthed in each and every department of the previous Socialist-led government.

"Yet I don't want to pre-judge the work of the commission," he added.

Members of parliament from the ruling GERB party and their right-wing allies approved earlier this week the creation of a commission to probe deals, expenses and appointments made during the last year of the ousted Socialist government term.

The news came weeks after Bulgaria's MPs approached the National Audit Office to make a check of how the previous cabinet of Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev handled its finances and property over the last year and seven months.

The movers say that the three-way coalition has inked a number of deals that hurt the public interest and breach the local legislation.

According to the proposal the commission has to conduct the probes within two months and to include two representatives from each parliamentary group.
