Bulgarian vineyards are facing tough times with the National Vine and Wine Chamber (NVWC) announcing a 70% fall in exports due to the financial crisis.

NVWC announced late Tuesday that the 70% year on year decrease in exported wine followed a decrease in exports that was also registered in 2008. The export of bottled wines dropped by 21% and the export of the dry wines fell by 30%; the export of sparkling wines also shrunk.

Last year, Bulgaria exported 873 hectoliters of wine, 63% of it to Russia and nineteen percent to Poland.

The fall comes despite a large amount of favorable foreign press on Bulgarian wines, including recent major newspaper articles in the US and UK. It was also recently announced that French wine experts had decided to open Bulgarian wine tours.
