A long line of people wait outside the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachusetts, USA where Senator Edward Kennedy will lie in repose until later in the afternoon 28 August 2009.

Enormous crowds gathered again Friday morning to get a glimpse of the flag-draped coffin of US Senator Edward Kennedy, brother of US President John F. Kennedy.

Members of Kennedy's giant extended family remained on hand, greeting many of the well-wishers personally, the Washington Post reported.

Kennedy's office announced that the motorcade bearing his body to Arlington National Cemetery for burial Saturday afternoon will only be viewed by the public briefly.

In Boston, Kennedy family members estimated that some 25 000 people passed by the late senator's casket during the public viewing that began Thursday afternoon and continued until 2 am Friday, hours later than originally planned.

The senator's widow Victoria, son Patrick, nephew Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and niece Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, were among those who stayed late to meet the mourners who came to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

Thousands more began gathering before 5 am Friday, waiting for the wake to resume. Doors reopened well ahead of the scheduled time of 8 am, with lines stretching a kilometer.
