Russia is never going to change its decision to support the independence of the two breakaway Georgian republics, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

This was stated by the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, during his state visit to the capital of Mongolia, Ulan Bator, on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, exactly a year after the Kremlin recognized the independence of the two new states.

"I am not sorry for this decision. For our state, this decision is irreversible," Medvedev said.

The way for South Ossetia and Abkhazia's independence was open after the Russian forces prevented Georgia from reestablishing its control over the two republics in a five-day war in August 2009.

The only other state that has recognized them besides Russia is Nicaragua.

During his Mongolia visit, Medvedev and his Mongolian counterpart Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj laid wreaths to a monument of Marshal Zhukov to mark the 70th anniversary of the Soviet-Mongolian victory on the Khalkin-Gol River over Japan.
