Bulgaria PM Borisov Willing to Become Organ Donor

Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, supported the organ donor campaign "There Is Life after Death" and said he was fully prepared to become an organ donor.

Borisov spoke in an interview for the "Novinite" (News) broadcast of the TV channel PRO.BG.

Beginning Wednesday, according to the PM, all those waiting for transplants will receive renewed hopes for normal life. The Ministries Council will slate BGN 96 M from the State budget for their treatment, Borisov said.

Doctors in Bulgaria estimate that in one year, three transplant patients cost the country as much as just one patient on dialysis.

"I have not inquired about the economic effect. I am simply trying to see the case from the viewpoint of those, who are in trouble. Regardless of the cost, the State is stronger than them and has money for them," the PM stated in the interview.

Currently organ transplants are the only hope for survival for about 1,000 Bulgarians while an additional 850 are waiting for a kidney transplant.

Borisov declared his belief that organ donation is a humanitarian act he, himself, was prepared to commit.

"Part of you continues to live," he concluded.

The "There Is Life after Death" campaign of "Novinite" of PRO.BG began on April 13, 2009 and has received a mounting support from hospital directors, transplant agencies, patient organizations and many citizens.
