Bulgaria's ruling political party GERB of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov seeks to change some basic elements of the country's political system, which might potentially entail a change in the form of government.

This was stated by Mariya Nedelcheva, Member of the European Parliament from the GERB party, in an interview for Novinite.com.

Nedelcheva, who is also an Assistant Professor of political science at the Bordeaux Political Science Institute, stressed that the GERB party and its leader Borisov were set on implementing changes in Bulgaria's political system in order to provide for political stability and to terminate the using of electoral legislation for political manipulations.

Nedelcheva believes that Bulgaria needed changes in the Constitution that was adopted in 1991 in order to account for the new realities by making the constitutional texts a lot more flexible.

She also thinks that should Bulgaria move to change its form of government, the most suitable option for the country would be a semi-presidential system of the French type, which would rule out any potential authoritarian trends of a purely presidential system.

Nedelcheva also said that on a number of its criteria, the GERB party could be described as Gaullist party.
