The 49-year-old Bulgarian policeman, Lyubomir Mitov, who was wounded in a gunfight on July 10, has died in hospital.

Mitov was shot as he was trying to prevent the theft of a luxury jeep in the town of Svoge just northeast of Sofia. He started chasing the stolen car with his partner when the two thieves opened fire, and Mitov was severely wounded.

Later the thieves, aged 22 and 34, were arrested and admitted they had accomplices; both had criminal records.

Officer Mitov was rushed to hospital with two bullet wounds - in the liver and in the lower part of the skull. The doctors in Sofia have been trying to save his life for more than a month.
