Bulgaria Prime Minister Promises State Aid for Quake-Hit Regions

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov promised state aid for the regions near popular tourist locations, which suffered damages in the recent earthquake, the strongest to shake the country this year.

"It is an obligation of the state to lend a hand to the people, who are in trouble," Borisov said in the town of Shabla, Northeastern Bulgaria.

Shabla mayor Krassimir Krastev said he needed between BGN 80,000-100,000 to cover the expenses after repairing the damages from the earthquake. Another BGN 63,000 will be poured inot the village of Kamen bryag.

An earthquake of magnitude of 4,7 on the Richter scale with an epicenter 61 km east of Varna, 24 km east of Kavarna and 20 km southeast of Shabla, was registered on Wednesday morning.

The tremor caused walls to crack, ceilings, fences and chimneys to fall in the village of Kamen bryag, the municipality of Shabla and the town of Balchik.

It brought memories of March 4, 1977 when a strong earthquake caused mass destruction in northern Bulgaria.

The epicenter was in Romania's mountainous area of Vrancea, home to a major fault line that has seen dozens of quakes in recent years.

The 1977 7.6-magnitude quake killed more than 1,000 people in the Vrancea area when dozens of buildings collapsed.
