Seven new asteroids have been discovered by a group of Bulgarian astronomers from the Zvezdno Obshtestvo Observatory.

The Small Body Nomenclature (CSBN) of the International Astronomical Union at Harvard University in the US have registered the new asteroids and given them temporary names until they are officially named by their discoverers.

The asteroids are located in the constellation Capricorn, have diameters of between 0,7 and 1,7 km and pass between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter at periods of 3,9 to 5,7 Earth years.

One of the asteroids, designated the name 2009 OW2, belongs to a rare group of space objects in the Nysa family. It is located on the outskirts of the main asteroid belt near the orbit of Mars.

The Bulgarian astronomers found one of the new comets twelve hours earlier than their American colleagues.

Over the past four years astronomers at the Zvezdno Obshtestvo Observatory, headed by Dr Philip Fratev have discovered 16 new asteroids. In March this year one of the bodies was given the name Vasil Levski.

Vasil Levski was the nickname of Vasil Ivanov Kunchev (18 July 1837-18 February 1873), a Bulgarian revolutionary renowned as the national hero of Bulgaria.
