Romania's President Traian Basescu described the results of Sunday's early Parliamentary Elections in Moldova as a "success for the democratic opposition".

After the count of 98,3% of the cast votes, the four opposition parties combined get 53 seats in the 101-seat Parliament, BGNES reported. The opposition parties have agreed not to cooperate with the communists of former President Vladimir Voronin, who have gotten only 48 seats - 12 fewer than in the disputed April 2009 elections.

The election of a new President of Moldova requires 61 votes in Parliament. This requirement led to the adjourning of the Parliament that was elected in April 2009 as the communists had only 60 MP votes.
