Ferrari Formula One driver, Felipe Massa, is in a "stable, satisfactory" condition following emergency surgery after he suffered skull damage and concussion.

The Brazilian hit a tire wall after a spring from Rubens Barrichello's car flew up and hit Massa's helmet during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.

Massa had initially suffered "serious, life-threatening injuries", according to Budapest's AEK military hospital, the BBC reported.

"After the operation he is being cared for in intensive care and now he is in stable, satisfactory condition", a hospital press release said.

However, Ferrari later said the operation was "positive" and a "success".

The Italian team said Massa will remain under observation in intensive care and Ferrari will make a further statement on his condition on Sunday.

"At the moment he's under anesthetic and will be woken up on Sunday", AEK military hospital medical director Peter Bazso added.

Latest reports have said that Massa is put in an artificial comma, and is on artificial respiration.

"The doctors are happy, he's in a stable condition and they will know a lot more tomorrow", Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said after visiting Massa in hospital on Saturday evening.

The incident comes days after Formula Two driver Henry Surtees, 18, was killed in what was described as a "freak" accident during a race at Brands Hatch.
