US Vice President Joe Biden hugs a youth as he meets child refugees, mostly from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, in Tbilisi, Georgia, 23 July 2009. Joe Biden's visit is aimed at demonstrating US support to Georgia.

US Vice President Joe Biden declared in Tbilisi Thursday that America supported "united Georgia".

In a speech before the Georgian Parliament, Biden declared that the US had a clear, unequivocal message: that it wanted to see "a free, secure, democratic, united Georgia".

Yet, Biden also told Georgia's leaders that they would never be able to use military means to recover South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the two breakaway republics whose independence has been recognized by Russia after the August 2008 war between Georgia and Russia.

After meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Biden also held talks with four opposition leaders who have condemned Saakashvili as a despot.

Before coming to Georgia, Biden also visited the Ukraine in a move on part of the Obama Administration to demonstrate its support for the two former Soviet republics while at the same time seeking to improve its relations with Russia.
