In the first half of 2009 the Bulgarian brewers have produced 4% less beer compared to the same period of 2008.

The Bulgarian Brewers Union explains the reduction with the lower purchasing power of Bulgarians and job uncertainty due to the financial crisis, the long and cold winter, and the weak tourist season.

The forecast is not brighter, even if by the end of the summer the situations is to improve, because the crisis is yet to reach its bottom in Bulgaria, according to local brewers.

Despite the crisis, the Bulgarian brewers already invested BGN 40 M in 2009 over the strong market competion in Europe where Bulgarian beer remains the cheapest brew.

The biggest investors are Kamenitsa with a new glass bottle line, Carlsberg with new plastic bottles, labels and their renovated Blagoevgrad brewery; Zagorka introduced modern transparent labels and a new bottle caps line, Boliyarka also has new labels, refrigeration facilities and warehouses.
