Bulgaria Election Winner Picks Lady for Parliament Speaker

Bulgaria's future Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, confirmed on Monday that Tsetska Tsacheva will be elected speaker of the new Parliament, completely in line with his earlier vows to promote women to power.

Borisov made the announcement on his way out of a working meeting of politicians and MPs elected on the ticket of his centre-right party, which claimed a landslide victory in the general elections on July 5, defeating the ruling Socialist-led three-way coalition.

The meeting took place a day before the 41st National Assembly is convened for its first session.

The meeting unanimously approved the nomination of Tsetska Tsacheva for parliamentary speaker, Lachezar Ivanov - for deputy parliamentary speaker and Tsvetan Tsvetanov, former leader of the party, for acting head of the parliamentary group.

Borisov refused to disclose details about Tuesday's parliamentary session and the ongoing formation of the new government.

Asked about the possibility of getting support from any of the allies in the outgoing Socialist-led coalition, Borisov said they had no other choice as each of them has repeatedly stated that the quick formation of a new cabinet is a must.

Tsetska Tsacheva will be the first woman in Bulgarian history to head the Bulgarian National Assembly. She has served as municipal councillor on the ticket of GERB party in the northern town of Pleven since 2007. Before taking up this job, she worked as a legal adviser in the municipality of Pleven.

She was born in the village of Dragana, the district of Lovech. She is a law graduate of Sofia University. Prior to the collapse of the communist regime in 1989 Tsacheva was member of the Bulgarian Communist Party only to switch ranks after that and become member of the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces.
