The President of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), Jizhong Wei, arrived in Sofia Friday.

Wei was met by Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, who bestowed upon him an honorary order for his contributions to the development of volleyball all over the world and in Bulgaria in particular.

Later in the afternoon, the FIVB President, who is in Bulgaria on the invitation of the President of the Bulgarian Volleyball Association, Dancho Lazarov, inaugurated a commemorative plaque in front of the main entrance of the national "Vasil Levski" stadium.

The plaque, on one of the pillars near the entrance, will remind Sofia residents and visitors of the historic 1957 volleyball tournament that was won by the Bulgarian team. The tournament was held during the 53rd session of the International Olympic Committee when volleyball was recognized as Olympic sport.

The Sofia ceremony of the plaque opening also marked the 45th anniversary of the debut of volleyball at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Wei gave awards to several Bulgarian volleyball legends and visited the Sports Museum at the stadium.

During the weekend the FIVB President will travel to the Black Sea capital Varna and will watch live the World League games between Bulgaria and Cuba.

On July 12 Wei will attend the official meeting of the Governing Board of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation dedicated to the historical volleyball events.

It is expected that Wei's visit will be used by Bulgaria's volleyball activists to lobby for the FIVB support.
