New Airport Terminal in Bulgaria's Plovdiv to Welcome Passengers August 1

The new terminal at the Airport of Bulgaria's second biggest city of Plovdiv will be operational in one moth, on August 1.

This was announced Wednesday by the Transportation Minister, Petar Mutafchiev, at the official opening of the new building, Darik Radio reported.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, also attended the ceremony.

BGN 40 M has been invested in the project. BGN 20 M has been given by the airport, and the other BGN 20 M have been provided by the Bulgarian government.

The new terminal will have the capacity to serve 1 000 passengers an hour.

It is situated 250 m away from the current one, on an area of 6 759 square meters. The terminal will boost a modern system for passenger services, valued at BGN 3,6 M. Another BGN 19 M has been invested in the infrastructure.

The Plovdiv Airport was first opened in 1981, and is situated 12 kilometers South-East direction from Plovdiv. It has been a substitute for the Sofia Airport in case of bad weather or other emergencies.

There are no regular flights to the Plovdiv Airport. It operates passenger, cargo and business flights.

In the winter tourist season the Plovdiv Airport operates daily charter flights with passengers, headed to the Bulgarian winter resorts Bansko, Pamporovo, and Borovets
