The EU rules about the size and the form of many fruits and vegetables become ineffective beginning July 1.

The specific standards imposed by the European Commission for 26 varieties of fruits and vegetables are being revoked in July 2009, the EC representation in Bulgaria informed Wednesday.

The Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner, Mariann Fischer-Boel is quoted as saying: "July 1 marks the comeback of the crooked cucumber and the deformed carrot. This is a concrete example of our strive to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. It does not make any sense to throw away good products only over their irregular form."

Specific standards remain effective for 10 products, which make for 75% of the EU fruit and vegetable trade: apples, citrus fruits, kiwi, salads, peaches, nectarines, pears, strawberries, sweet paper, dessert grapes and tomatoes.

However, EU Member States would now be able to sell these 10 products in stores even if they do not correspond to the standards under the condition they are properly labeled.
