Bulgaria Ruse Shipyard Jolted by Workers' Protest over Delayed Pay

Over 600 workers from the "Rousse Shipyard" Jsc, the shipbuilding plant in Bulgaria's Danube city of Ruse, have declared civil disobedience over delayed salaries.

The workers staged a protest rally Monday morning and after that refused to return to their work spots starting what appears to be a permanent strike.

They are demanding their delayed April and May salaries, and claim they would not get back to work until they get paid in full.

A meeting between workers' representatives and the shipbuilding yard management is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30.

The Ruse shipyard workers started a strike in April over the same issue but terminated it after they were paid. After that, however, the management made all workers take an paid leave from April 16 until April 27.

The management of the shipbuilding yard does not conceal the fact that the plant has been affected badly by the effects of the global financial crisis, and has financial difficulties.
