Over BGN 100 000 were stolen from the Allianz Bank branch in Bulgaria's second largest city, Plovdiv.

The information was reported by the police, who say the robbers have broken in after silencing the alarm. The investigators also found that the keyhole of the vault where the money was kept has been cut with a power tool.

Ironically, the Allianz branch is only meters away from the Second Police Precinct in Plovdiv. They were alerted Monday morning, when the employees came to work and found about the missing money.

A group of elderly women told the police they were sitting on a bench near the bank, talking until 10 pm Sunday evening, but did not notice nay unusual activity.

"The stolen money is insured, there is no room for panic," the branch Director stated.

The bank robberies have been on the rise in Bulgarian in the last few months.

The branches of the same bank were broken in in the town of Petrich and the city of Kyustendil in southern Bulgaria in the beginning of June. A month earlier, police detained seven individuals while trying to rob a treasury in the city of Kazanlak. All seven are believed to be members of the so-called "Lyulin Gang" (from Sofia's "Lyulin" district), specializing in bank robberies.
