The Swedish EU Affairs Minister, Cecilia Malmstrom, stated that the control mechanism is beneficial for both the EU and Bulgaria.

Malmstrom was in Brussels Tuesday, along with Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, to map out the Swedish EU plans.

Sweden has assumed the rotating EU Presidency from the Czech Republic, and will hold it from July 1 until December 31, 2009.

Malmstrom also confirmed information, circulating in Bulgaria in the last few days, that the European Commission report should not be expected as early as the previous one (July 2008) and would be published in September.

Bulgaria's and Romania's weaknesses will be included in the list of issues the Swedish Presidency plans too deal with, according to the EU Affairs Minister, who added her country was going to work on those issues in close collaboration with the EC because the control mechanism depended on the Commission, not on what country is holding the EC Presidency.

"The process must be consistent and transparent. It depends on the EC, the Bulgarian politicians, the Bulgarian Cabinet to make it such," Minister Malmstrom pointed out.

The Swedish action plan will be submitted and discussed by the Swedish parliament Tuesday.
