80 schools will be closed all over Bulgaria over decisions made by local municipal councils.

The information was revealed Monday by the Chair of the Bulgarian Teacher's Trade Union, Yanka Takeva.

About 1 500 teachers are expected to lose their jobs while in other schools entire classes will be cut.

Bulgaria currently has abut 80 000 retired teachers with 2 500 retiring each year. About 50 000 former teachers are between 58 and 60 years of age and can be recertified.

Teachers from all over the country are expected to take part in the Tuesday protest rally in downtown Sofia with demands for higher salaries and more State funding for students.
