Prominent Bulgaria Lawyer Leads Far-Right Ataka MP Ticket

One of Bulgaria's most Prominent lawyers, Yavor Notev, leads two of the most important proportional ballots of the far-right, nationalist Ataka party.

After Ataka announced Sunday their ballots for the upcoming parliamentary elections on July 5, it became clear that Notev will lead the proportional lists in the 23rd electoral section in Sofia and in the Plovdiv Region, and will be the party's majority candidate in the same Sofia section.

The leader of Ataka, Volen Siderov, is leading the proportional lists in the Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas, and is the party's majority leader in Burgas.

Notev was recently involved in two high profile trials - one against Siderov and the other - against world skating champion, Maxim Staviiski.

In October 2008, Volen Siderov and his wife Kapka were acquitted in the dragging trial, brought against them over charges with incitement to perjury.

The defendants were accused of attempting to frame former party ally Pavel Chernev following an assault at Trakiya highway in April 2006.

On that day the car in which Volen Siderov was traveling became involved in an accident with another vehicle driven by Yavor Dokov with his father and grandfather as passengers. After the accident Siderov declared that his automobile was driven by Pavel Chernev and attempted to hide the fact that the driver of the car Lyubomir Bakardzhiev had a criminal record.

In mid-May, Bulgaria's Supreme Court of Cassation announced its decision to change Maxim Staviiski's effective sentence to a suspended one.

The Court changed the sentence of 2 years and 5 months behind bars to a suspended 2 years and 5 months one, with 5-year probation.

In January 2008, world skating champion, Maxim Staviiski received a suspended sentence of 2,5 years for driving drunk and causing a car crash in August 2007, which left the 24-year-old Petar Petrov dead, and the 18-year-old Manuela Gorsova comatose. Staviiski's blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was 1.24.

In December, the case against Staviiski was referred to the Burgas Appellate Court by the parents of the car crash victims.

On January 5, 2009 the Appellate Court in Burgas changed the 2,5-year suspended sentence into an effective one.

The Supreme Court of Cassation decision for the suspended sentence is final and cannot be appealed.
