Yane Yanev, the leader of the conservative ‘Order, Law and Justice' party will go head to head with controversial Muslim mayor Ahmed Bashev in the July 5 Bulgarian general elections.

Yanev has been listed as a majority candidate for his party in the Blagoevgrad region and will campaign directly against Bashev who has been included on the Blagoevgrad list of the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS).

Ahmed Bashev, mayor of the Garmen municipality, is suspected of forcefully promoting radical Islam and was recently questioned on these allegations by the national security agency.

Bashev and Garmen religion teacher, Murad Boshnak, were also investigated over sending death threats to Yanev, who recently listed Bashev as the third most corrupt mayor in Bulgaria.

Yanev's party recently failed to get any MEPs into the European Parliament and is hoping for a better showing in the general elections.
