Veselin Danov, in custody on charges of extortion, money laundering and luring people into prostitution, got an effective three-year prison sentence after reaching an agreement with the prosecutor's office.

Danov's son Hristo, who also spent nine months in custody on charges of extortion, has received an effective one-year jail sentence.

The agreements have been approved by the Varna District Court on Thursday.

The father and son announced last month their aspirations to run for MPs in the upcoming general elections and enter Bulgarian parliament this summer.

Vesselin and Hristo Danovi, municipal councilors from the Black Sea town of Varna, have been nominated on the ticket of the Bulgarian Patriots Union.

Vesselin Danov, 55, was arrested in September last year, followed by his son a few days later.
