Bulgaria Elects Two Former Foreign Ministers to European Parliament

The Bulgarian voters elected Sunday two of the country's Foreign Ministers as Members of the European Parliament - Ivaylo Kalfin and Nadezhda Mihaylova.

Kalfin, Bulgaria's outgoing Foreign Minister in the Stanishev government (2005-2009) is was the top candidate on the ticket of the Coalition for Bulgaria, led by the Bulgarian Socialist party. Kalfin himself is a member of "Social Democrats" political movement, a smaller leftist party.

Kalfin was Bulgaria's Foreign Minister during Bulgaria's EU accession on January 1, 2007. In the Stanishev government, he is also the Deputy PM in charge of the economy.

Nadezhda Mihaylova was Bulgaria's Foreign Minister in 1997-2001, in the government of the Union of Democratic Forces led by Ivan Kostov. She was the top candidate on the ticket of the rightist Blue Coalition made up of the Union of Democratic Forces, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, and three smaller partners.

Mihaylova was Foreign Minister during the Kosovo Crisis (1999) and at the time Bulgaria was invited to start EU accession negotiations (1999).
