Bulgaria Officers Set for Afghan Army Training Mission

Bulgaria's Council of Ministers confirmed Wednesday that Bulgarian army officers will help to train the Afghan army.

Twenty-six officers from various divisions across Bulgaria will join the NATO led mission on September 1. They will be part of the staff of an operational group for training and liaison services within the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF.) Bulgaria will also send to nine military equipment units to Afghanistan.

Bulgaria's Defense Minister, Nikolay Tsonev, announced the training plans in early April at a NATO summit in Strasbourg.

Bulgaria has 500 rangers in Afghanistan, but currently lacks the possibility to send more military, according to Tsonev.

A new deployment of 500 soldiers including the 26 training officers will depart for Kabul on September 1.
