Bulgaria's Emergency Ministry Issues Thunderstorm Warning

Bulgaria's Ministry of Emergency Situations and Disasters has warned its regional offices about possible heavy downpours, strong thunderstorms and localized hail.

The warning is for Northwestern Bulgaria for Tuesday afternoon.

The Meteorology Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences forecasts unstable atmospheric conditions with strong winds, heavy rain and thunder.

The warning has been sent to local offices all over the country, while municipal Mayors are mandated to undertake measures for flood prevention.

People, who are caught by the storm in the countryside, are advised to stay away from trees and rocks and if there is a dry object, to sit on it. People should also not be riding bicycles, keep way from power lines and metal constructions such as fences and rail guards and keep outside the water.

Those at home should turn off the power supply to their TV sets, outdoor antennas, computers, and other electrical appliances. Doors and windows must be closed. It is recommended to keep away from faucets, balcony doors and windows.

Those in cars need to lower their antennas and check the tires for burns in case of lightning and thunder.
