Iraqi Kurdistan Starts Exporting Oil

The Kurds in Northern Iraq have started to export oil from the first time in their history.

During a symbolic ceremony Monday in the capital of the autonomous region, Erbil, the President of Iraq, Jalal Talabani, himself an ethnic Kurd, and the President of the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan, Masud Barzani, kicked off the oil exports from two fields in Northern Iraq, BGNES reported.

Initially, Iraqi Kurdistan is going to export 90 000 barrels per day; 40 000 barrels from the Taq Taq field, and another 50 000 barrels from the Tawke field.

The oil will be exported through the pipeline connected Kirkuk with Turkey. According to The Guardian, Iraqi Kurdistan hopes to reach an oil export of 1 billion barrels per day within 2-3 years.
