Despite the recent tragedy when a bus killed 17 people and seriously injured several more during a Spasovden Fair near Yambol, the road rage in Bulgaria continued to take its toll over the weekend.

A 38-year-old driver killed with his BMW three people near the village of Gintsi, in the Sofia Region.

The incident happened Saturday evening when the man lost control, flipping the car over. His three passengers died on the spot.

The man has been taken to the Emergency "Pirogov" hospital in Sofia where he had refused to take the blood alcohol test and declined any treatment. The man is currently in police custody.

Another 11 people were injured during a traffic incident in Bulgaria's second largest city, Plovdiv, in the pre-dawn hours Sunday, when a car driven by a 29-year-old man hit a horse carriage.

All injured were passengers in the carriage and have been taken to the hospital - four have broken legs while the others were listed with lighter injuries. Nine of the injured have already been released.

The Plovdiv driver is held under arrest for 24 hours and will be charged with DUI. The horse, terrified from the accident, ran away with the carriage, and was later found on the road leading to the town of Karlovo.

Another accident took the life of the wife of the Mayor of the village of Yablanovo, near the town of Kotel. The Mayor himself is on life-support in the hospital in the city of Sliven. Their 15-year-old son was also injured, but is reported in stable condition.

The incident happened Saturday night when Sherif Kuvandzha lost control over the car he was driving on a wet road near Kotel and hit head-on the incoming light truck. His wife died on the spot.

38-year-old Kuvandzha was serving his third term as Mayor of Yablanovo, a village populated mostly by ethnic Turks. He is not a member of the ethnic Turkish party, Movement for Rights and Freedoms, but of the opposition, right-wing, Union of Democratic Forces.

The case is under investigation.

In another incident, a 60-year-old man and his two passengers, two girls aged 16 and 18 were hurt near the city of Shumen Saturday night.

The driver lost control of the car and hit a billboard alongside the road. He suffered a broken leg and right arm while the older girl broke her right leg and arm. The younger one escaped with a broken tooth.

The DUI test revealed the man has not been drinking.
