Bulgaria Registers Guilty Verdicts' Increase

The number of criminal trials with guilty verdicts has increased by 4,5% compared to 2007, according to data from the National Statistic Institute (NSI)

The number of criminals receiving sentences has increased by 2,1% for the same period with a total of 31 687 convicted individuals in 2008.

The total number of guilty verdicts for 2008 is 28 316.

Among them property theft is the most common offense - 7 843 such crimes with 11 007 convicted felons.

There is a decrease in the sentences for crimes related to illegal drugs - from 1003 in 2007 to 746 in 2008.

The convicted felons between 18 and 24 years of age are the majority of those receiving guilty verdicts in 2008 - 9 275 or 29% of all convictions.
