Bulgaria signed Friday an agreement with the IT giant IBM for collaboration in the field of nanotechnology.

The contract was signed by Bulgaria's Deputy Finance Minister, Lyubomir Datsov, and IBM CEO for Central and East Europe, Marcello Lema.

In the beginning of April 2009 Bulgaria's government decided to establish Bulgarian Center of Nanotechnology, and its capitalization would amount to EUR 25 M.

IBM Bulgaria will be a major partner in Bulgaria's nanotechnology projects. The company possesses over 10 000 patents in these fields.

The project is an important step for the development of Bulgaria's potential in the research and development of nanotechnologies, nanomaterials, nanoproducts and micro machines. This will eventually lead to an increase in country's economy competitiveness.

Nanotechnology is the study of the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally it deals with structures of the size 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size.
