The security of the National Palace in Belgrade had requested from all journalists, reporting the visit US Vice-President Joseph Biden, to take off their shoes.

The meeting between Biden and his Serbian counterpart, Boris Tadic, went under tight security measures with all journalist undergoing thorough checkups twice - ones by the Serbian police and one more time by the US special agents.

"We must take away the shoes of all reporters in order to avoid the incident with President Bush in Iraq when a local journalist threw a shoe at him," one of the special agents is quoted as saying.

All buildings near the palace had sharpshooters on their roofs while Biden himself traveled in a specially equipped "Cadillac".

Biden is the highest ranking American politician to officially visit Serbia since the June 1980 visit of then President Jimmy Carter.

Biden's Balkan tour ends Thursday with a visit to the capital of Kosovo, Pristina, where streets are covered with flowers, US and Kosovo flags, huge billboards with Biden's portrait and greetings such as "Welcome" and "Thank you America!"

Biden is scheduled to meet with the Kosovo President and Prime Minister Thursday, and visit the US military base.
